Mariology and Common Sense

This essay argues that Catholic Marian doctrines rest on rational foundations accessible through reason and Scripture. The author contends that honouring Mary reflects proper understanding of Christ’s divinity and fulfilment of the Fourth Commandment.

On Human Reflection

Alessio emphasises mankind’s unique capacity for reflection, which naturally leads to examining sacred matters. As he notes: “It is as natural to Mankind to examine topics such as the intercession of Saints… as it is to study the origins of tornadoes.”

The Divine Maternity

The foundation for all Marian doctrine. Since Christ is truly God, Mary is genuinely the Mother of God — a title affirmed by Scripture and early Church councils. All other Marian doctrines flow from this central truth.

The Immaculate Conception

Defended through Duns Scotus’s distinction between restorative and preservative redemption. God’s honour toward His Mother suggests He would preserve her from sin’s stain entirely. A physician who prevents a patient from ever contracting a disease is a greater physician than one who merely cures it after the fact.

Perpetual Virginity

The author argues the womb housing God Incarnate must remain sanctified and inviolate. Saint Jerome’s principle: “We believe that God was born of a Virgin because we read it.” The Protestant Reformers themselves — Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli — affirmed Mary’s perpetual virginity as scriptural teaching.

The Assumption

Bodily assumption reflects Christ’s perfect fulfilment of honouring parents. The author contends: denying this doctrine suggests Christ acts miserly toward His Mother. If He could preserve her body from corruption, it would be unbefitting not to do so.

Co-Redemptrix

Mary actively co-operated in redemption, paralleling Old Testament examples of human co-operation with divine plans. As the New Eve, she gave her free consent at the Annunciation where Eve had given disobedience, thereby playing an active role in the work of our redemption.

Conclusion

Alessio insists authentic faith requires defending Mary’s honour vigorously, not apologetically. The more the honour and love of Christ increases among men, so much the esteem and honour given to Mary should grow — for all Marian doctrine ultimately points back to the truth about Christ.
